Escape Love (Video Premiere)

Escape love is a song on my latest album, Cheer for the Deer. The song is about receiving love and letting it fill your heart. This video is a tribute to our dog Ziggy, who we sadly had to put down last year (2021). He enriched our lives like we couldn’t have predicted. We were heartbroken to say goodbye, but will cherish him forever. He would have been 8 years old today – May 30, 2022.

Cheer for the Deer – Instrumentals

For all my media friends, if you are looking for a theme for your show/podcast, please consider any of my songs, or these instrumentals!

1985

Some background: right after the intro song, “Enter the Deer“, the album resets the perspective with a 1980s-esque instrumental called appropriately “1985”. This song has some heavy synths in it. I have had this song around since the early 2010s, and originally was considering re-recording it with a full rock band, i.e. guitars, real drums, etc.

Black Bars

Another song that was from a long time ago, “Black Bars” has a very big band sound to it. I get this from my days in highschool and band. We were badasses, we had a very broad mix of musical influences. I remember doing Holst “The Planets”, particularly “Mars the bringer of war” with it’s 5/4 time signature. It was a very fun time playing that song. Anyways this song really is supposed be exhilarating and I hope you enjoy it!

“Enter the Deer”

Some background on “Enter the Deer” which kicks off the album “Cheer for the Deer”.

This song was an afterthought for me, it was the last song I put together for the album. I wanted a way to introduce everything, and was thinking of a beginning somewhat like “Faith” from George Michael, except with narration. And ultimately I wanted it to morph into some kind of Synth symphony with a heartbeat. As you’ll see the heartbeat is also used on the title track.

Narration wise, I could only picture one voice, and that was my pal Paul Pasanen (Drummer from Vicky von Vicky) to do this.

I basically gave him the lyrics and said just recite it like a poem, I didn’t let him hear the music, I didn’t want him to be influenced by it. He sent me 3 or 4 takes, I think i took the first two! And then I put it all together, I think it works perfectly for what I intended. So it’s not really a song per-se, but more like a musical introduction. This album is not like anything i’ve released before.

BTW – you can hear more from Paul tomorrow when he takes on lead vocalist role for the newest Vicky von Vicky song “The Cuba Libre Song” out tomorrow, April 22nd.

“Cheer for the Deer” Album out Now!

Happy birthday (Literally) to Cheer for the Deer, I’ve been waiting for a LONG time to get this sucker out there. It was recorded over several years, but solidified between Nov 2020 and March 2021.

Stream it here

Spent many a night – fiddling/recording/playing/experimenting, with my trusty dog Ziggy sleeping at my feet over this period. It was in early January that the song “Cheer for the Deer” started to take form, and I realized it was a great name for an album.

Thanks to Kristi Herold for mentioning how she always “Cheered for the Deer” when her family partook in an annual hunt in northern Ontario. This phrase inspired a lot of this album, which takes some dark turns but is optimistic.

There are 11 songs here, well technically 11, I see them really as only 9. The last one would have been 8 mins long if I hadn’t split it into 2 parts.

Special thanks to Paul Pasanen (narration on Enter the Deer) and Rolston Miller, bass on The Fire Inside and Cheer for the Deer (both parts). These fellas are also in my other band Vicky von Vicky. We have something new in a couple of weeks for that as well.

Also thanks to Nixon Boyd (Banquet Sound) for the mixing, Noah Mintz for the Mastering (Lacquer Channel).

Do These Sound the Same?

So the world seems like a disaster at the moment, here’s a little distraction, I hope.

A couple of days ago I uploaded a video for my song The Fire Inside to Youtube, after it processed I was surprised to find it had been flagged for a Copyright claim, the details said that from the 2:06 mark until the end the melody was the same as another song, this one: My Body’s a Zombie for You by Dead Man’s Bones.

I was intrigued and a little surprised. I had never been flagged for this with any of my songs before, and I had never heard the song in question nor of the band before.

So l listened to the song (My Body’s a Zombie for You), i actually liked it, it reminds me of Timbre Timber a bit.  Turns out that one of the members of the band is a Ryan Gosling.  Yes THAT Ryan Gosling, the other Canadian Ryan.  But they only put out one album and that was over a decade go, but its quite good. I’m most definitely a new fan.

So I’ve disputed this and hope to hear back soon.  But why don’t you decide for yourself, did I rip it off, are there any similarities?  Or is this an AI/algorithm fail?

The Fire Inside

Today is the day that you get to hear one more song before the upcoming album Cheer for the Deer is released on April 6th. This song is a bit different than the others so far, in that it isn’t exactly an 80s influenced song. You may hear a bit of Rock and Jazz/Big Band, etc.

The song is a bit about the absurdity of life, how on one hand disaster is happening everywhere in the world, but on the other, for some, they are oblivious to this. The Fire Inside refers to our life force, our passion, our heart, what makes us tick, etc. And it doesn’t just apply to humans, it’s in everything!

I hope you enjoy it!

Special thanks to all my pals for helping me figure out what songs to put out first, let’s call you the Dunany gang for now.

New Song “Worthless Souls” and upcoming album “Cheer for the Deer” details

Today is the release of the second single from the upcoming Melted Wings album “Cheer for the Deer”, (out on April 6th, 2022).

You can stream it here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/meltedwings/worthless-souls

The new song is titled “Worthless Souls” and again takes some influence from 80’s electronic and new wave, such as Depeche Mode, OMD and New Order. The track calls out how sexism and power have corrupt all levels of society. We all need to recognize this going forward and make sure that it doesn’t go unchecked.

The new album “Cheer for the Deer” will be out on April 6th, and consists of 11 tracks, here is a complete track listing:

  1. Enter the Deer
  2. 1985
  3. Worthless Souls
  4. Capture Love
  5. The Fire Inside
  6. Escape Love
  7. Black Bars
  8. Deep Scars
  9. No Matter What You Say
  10. Cheer for the Deer Part 1
  11. Cheer for the Deer Part 2

Surprise EP “Before the Deer”!

“Before the Deer” min EP Cover

OK this isn’t really much of an EP, it’s really all around one song: “Cheer for the Deer“. And I know, don’t release stuff in December. But I thought for those getting wary of Christmas songs, it could break up the malaise. And, well you know what? This seemed like a good time to release a song like this, if you will. It almost dares you to like it. Here’s a video I made, it may be hard to watch for some (because of the shaky filming not the content):
